Surrey’s recognition as the home to the first nationally recognized Cyber Security Cluster in South-East England represents a concentrated effort to bring together businesses, academic institutions, and governmental bodies with a focus on enhancing cyber security capabilities and infrastructure.

Gold Standard Universities

Two of the UK’s five Gold Standard Cyber Security Universities (Royal Holloway and University of Surrey) are located in Surrey. Royal Holloway’s world-class research in cyber security has been recognised by GCHQ and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), one of only three universities in the UK to achieve such status. Royal Holloway is also one of the founder institutions of the International Cyber Security Centre of Excellence.

Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP)

The Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) is a world-leading research centre, dedicated to discovering new methods that enable computers to process human speech and visual information. It is the largest biometric test lab in Europe, which has been set up to evaluate facial recognition systems. The lab conducts innovative research into biometric traits – voices, faces, fingerprints or irises – with the aim of developing systems that can accurately identify people from these traits alone.

Royal Holloway University London

The Master’s in Information Security at Royal Holloway, University of London, stands out as one of the longest-running master’s degrees in this specialization in the world, a testament to its pioneering role in the field of cyber security education. Established in the mid-1990s, the program has been at the forefront of developing the academic and practical framework necessary to address the evolving challenges in the cyber security landscape.

Surrey Cyber Security Cluster

The UK Cyber Cluster Collaboration (UKC3) has officially recognised the county of Surrey as a cluster within the cyber security sector, following their application in March 2022. This accolade supports the growing success and prestige of the sector across the region and will help to put Surrey on the map as a key player within the cyber security space.
